Goniurosaurus orientalis is one of the most beautiful geckoes. It originally lives on the island of Ie-Jiima, Tonaki-Shima, Aka-Shima and Tokashiki-Shima. This species becomes up to 16 cm and it has deep red eyes. Its basic color is dark brown or black with an orange or red pattern.

There are different color pattern of Goniurosaurus orientalis. Some exemplars are almost completely dark brown with only very thin orange lines on their body. Others have a very prominent, yet irregular pattern of orange red color. This species varies very much. I would like to know if the differences in color are due to the geckoes’ place of origin (depending on the island they live on).

Recently hatched geckoes are black with deep orange red lines. They have deep red eyes similar to Goniurosaurus kuroiwae. The tail is black with white rings.
When growing up, there is a change in color taking place. In the black areas between the orange lines, tiny orange red dots become visible. After a while, these dots can even become bigger. The pattern of some exemplars becomes rather irregular, others have horizontal (head to tail) or vertical (side to side) line pattern. I personally think that Goniurosaurus orientalis is the most fascinating gecko ever.

Just hatched... Goniurosaurus orientalis
This species is a very fascinating one. It is the only representative of Goniurosaurus which does not have red eyes. Its iris is golden yellow. Goniurosaurus yamashinae lives on the island of Kume. Goniurosaurus yamashinae is the biggest and most robust representative of the Kuroiwae-group. Some animals I have are 18 cm long. The basic color of their body is black with a yellow line pattern. There are no big differences in pattern at all.
Very young geckoes are black with white lines on their body. Recently hatched geckoes are already relatively big, which is a major difference to all other geckoes belonging to the Kuroiwae-group.
When growing up, the lines become yellow. Yellow dots on the black areas of their body become visible, some turn into bigger spots of different size.
This G.yamashinae is 5 months old.

occurrence :
Goniurosaurus orientalis lives on the islands of Tonaki-shima (Terra typica), Aka-shima, Tokashiki-shima and Ie-shima of the Riu-Kiu archipelago belonging to Japan. It was found there in the subtropical forest near small streams (KAVERKIN 1999).
Description
Like the other Goniurosaurus species of the kuroiwae group, G. orientalis is also located in the lower part within the genus. They are similar in size to the animals of the lichtenfelderi group and G. bawanglingensis. KAVERKIN (2000) states that the total length (GL) for this group is 120 to 140 mm. Our adult G. orientalis measure between 152 and 155 mm GL with a head-trunk length (KRL) of 80 mm, their weight is 11 to 14 g. Also with this Geckoart juvenile and adult coloring and drawing are different.
On the dark brown side, four orangerous bands appear on the trunk on the dark brown side, while some spots are colored in the nape without the formation of a continuous nuchal band. The limbs are also orange-speckled, the top of the head is still dark, with some specimens slightly brighter. Four or five white bands are drawn across the almost black tail. In the course of the growth, irregular spots appear in the tympanum on the trunk between the bands; in some specimens, the spots form longitudinal stripes. The head is adorned in subadulte and adult animals individually a spot drawing or a more meandering pattern of brown and red. Between the tapes of the tail show additional gray to dirty white incomplete to closed bandages. The red color can fade more or less with the adult animals in old age.
Behavior :
This gecko is a strictly nocturnal animal and shows itself only in complete darkness outside the day of the day. Beutents are slowed down slowly and are usually captured with a short jump. When distressed, the animals stand up with their legs stretched, and the tail is almost vertically raised, carrying out slow serpent movements. If the disturbance persists, the geckos escape in a rapid spurt through the terrarium. They are generally more terrible than the representatives of the other two Goniurosaurus groups. Usually the animals stay on the ground, but climb up and again on the obligatory branch and were also seen in the upper part of a Ficus benjamina.
Terrarium maintenance :
We hold two adult females together in a terrarium of size 45x45x45 cm.Males are held individually. Only for mating, the animals are put together for two to three weeks. The terrarium consists of two prefabricated caves, a cork bark, a drinking bowl, a climbing branch and a ficus benjamina. For the ground we use Kokoshumus.Illuminated with a T5 tube (21W for two terrariums). The temperature is controlled by the room heating system.
Offspring :
Four to five weeks after mating with the males, the females laid their first scabies. At intervals of about four weeks followed another (one to three) scrims. The deposit was always in one of the caves, a hill from ground ground above the eggs marked the deposit. For a few days this place was guarded by the female, even after removal of the eggs. The eggs were about 18 mm long and 11 mm wide.
At incubation temperatures (in each case constant) between 23.5 and 28.5 ° C., the incubation period was 51 to 70 days. The total length of the hatches was about 74 mm with an approximately balanced ratio of KRL and SL. The rearing of the young animals takes place in plastic boxes in a rack system. A male measured after half a year had a GL of 120 mm with a KRL of 65 mm.

I would get these beautiful Gecko again that I would never have dreamed of. In Japan, he is strictly protected, because it is found in nature only very rarely. Home he is only on the island Iheya - Jima. Goniurosaurus toyamai Goniurosaurus orientalis looks very similar. After its discovery, he would run as G. orientalis,After its discovery, he was assigned to G.orientalis , but a scientist examined this Gecko 1999 and found some important differences to G.orientalis. So he was told in 1999 of an independent nature. The basic color of this Goniurosaurus is black with bright orange - red to pink ribbons, which run across the back. He is bigger and stronger than G.orientalis.

If G.toyamai comes out of the egg, the base color is black with pink stripes. With increasing age, the patrol turn red. A few years later, the drawing will be pink on the back and the head again.

Goniurosaurus orientalis up and down Goniurosaurus toyamai compared
After hatching, the two types differ only marginally. G. orientalis is equal to red when it comes out of the egg . G.toyamai is pink and after a few days, the drawing color pink also red . In this phase, one can distinguish these two species only very difficult. After about 2 months to begin with G. orientalis form in the black areas small to medium sized red spots, this can be in the picture above already recognize. In G. toyamai these spots form only sporadically, they are bigger.
